Lesson 6:Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Think
Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) when you need to collaborate with other students on a project outside of class? In other words, what do you usually do if you want to show someone what you have done? What do you do if you need to work on it at the same time? How do you feel about doing collaborative work? Please write a brief description.

I like collaborative work in terms of getting new ideas and advices. Though the work can be good for our study, it is pretty stressful. I did this kind of work by meeting my partner offline before starting this lesson. On that point, we have to manage our time to meet and have to make drafts separate then later we make them together. It actually bothered me much. Only once, I made a discussion which was a kind of outside class work by using chat system belongs to Google groups. That was better than doing the work separately but it was also troublesome. Because we couldn't see the draft. It took time to just point out which part of the document I want to talk about.

Explore
It is easy to learn a new way to create, share, publish, collaborate, and access you work anywhere. The video that follows explains more about Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Watch it a few times, stop and start it at critical points (the narration is fast!), take some notes. Try to identify two or three things about using GDS that could make studying easier for you. Please watch this video.

It says that GDS enables all group members(I mean editors) work on newest version of the document. Also we can share presentation and spreadsheet. These features of GDS are very helpful with our group essay assignments or group presentations in terms of not being confused by old version document. One more good aspect is that we can choose the member to share. We don't have to upload and share all document with people all over the world in order to share with the particular members. The owners of the document can even choose the members only to view their work not for editing. It may be helpful for our study.
Explain
Write a post reflecting on GDS with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.

1. What are the main skills needed to use GDS?
The main skill needed to use GDS is, I think, just a skill to make an account. Also to think how to use it is important because it can be used in many way.

2. What are the affordances of GDS (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
GDS lets our collaborate work go well. It is because of the functions GDS has. These enable us work with our own PC, at home. Also GDS release us from troublesome meeting to talk when the group members can meet. It is the waste of time. Many paper copies is one of the cause of trouble in group work. With GDS, we won't be bothered by paper copies.

3. How can GDS be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
It can be a strong tool of collaborate work in terms of sharing. We can just send invitation by e-mail to share information. We don't have to see each other in order to write a group essay. Also we can make documents on GDS and publish them to our own blogs(or e-portfolios) through GDS. It is very useful that e-portfolio, which is to store information and past works, is connected directly to GDS, with which we can make documents.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned about GDS that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?

I learned that GDS can be very powerful tool for collaborate work. Also it is useful for our personal work because, as long as we can be online, GDS provide us the documents wherever and whenever. We can easily share documents, presentations and spreadsheets. This must be useful for our learning.

Lesson 4: Social Bookmarking

Think
Before you began this course, what arrangements did you make (or still do) to save your favourite web pages? What provisions do you make to be able to access them whenever and wherever you need them?
Actually, I did nothing to save them. When I need to access them outside, I send the URL to my e-mail account such as yamata. Of course, I have to do it before going outside. So it sometimes bothered me. Or I can just search the web pages again.

Do
1. How to use Delicious. Take some time to view a couple of these presentations on Delicious 1 2 3 4 (easiest first, more detailed last). Please focus on identifying what you already know, as well as two or three things that you did not know, which may make studying easier for you. You should take some notes.
I know nothing about Delicious before starting this lesson. It is because I didn't think bookmarks are important and very useful. As I mentioned above, I can search with search engines again and again as long as I remember the term to search them.

Explain
1. What are the main skills needed to use Delicious?
We don't need any special skills. What we have to do is to make an account, choose web pages and organize them. The last one is somehow important to have a comfortable learning environment. We can do it with tags.

2. What are the affordances of social bookmarking (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
We can access our favorite web pages whenever and wherever we want. Also we can find new useful web pages checking others' Delicious. At the same time, we can send information of our favorite web pages through publishing them.

3. How can Delicious be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
It can be a tool to interact favorite web pages. In terms of research, web pages which has big amount of visitors may make a main stream in that field. To check these sites is very important. Also these pages with many supporters tend to be useful and well-organized. In order to learn efficiently, it is good to use them.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned about social bookmarking that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
Through social bookmarking systems, we can see how popular the web page is. It means that the web page is supported by many people. Therefore the page must have something attractive. The social bookmarking can be a guide for us to have an efficient research.

Lesson5:RSS-Rich Site Summary

Think
1. Which sites do you visit regularly? Make a list (4~5 is fine). Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) to keep yourself up to date on new content posted to your favourite sites?

http://w3.icu.ac.jp/ (W3)
http://ojames.blogspot.com/ (Social Computing)
http://euthanasia.procon.org/ (Euthanasia) RSS
http://jp.youtube.com/(YouTube) RSS

In order to keep myself up to date on new content, I just visit these homepages everyday(or sometimes).

Explore
1. Websites that display a button similar to the ones here on the right have an RSS feed that you can subscribe to. Visit a few of the sites that you listed above (Think step). Look over each site carefully, can you find an RSS button? You might need to scroll down the page, and you will need to look carefully if it is a 'busy' page. Which of your favourite sites provide an RSS feed? Write RSS next to each of these sites in your list. Which ones don't? Can you think why some sites do not?

In case of W3, we need ID&password to access. I think it make W3 difficult to have RSS. Also website of Social Computing doesn't have one. Blogger has a gadget to add RSS feed, but it is a class homepage. So it may not be useful to use it. On the other hand, YouTube and discussion site about Euthanasia have RSS feeds. It is because these sites are big enough to take a benefit of them. And they don't have difficulties of having them.

2. How to collect information automatically. Please watch this video that explains more about RSS and how to set up Google Reader, so that you can collect all your updates in one location. Please watch the video a few times, stop and start it at critical points, and use it to learn more about RSS. When you feel confident go onto Do below.

Explain
1. What are the main skills needed to use Google Reader?
The main skills are skills to decide which homepage to take RSS feed, find RSS feed on the page, use Google Reader and organize information I get through it.

2. What are the affordances of RSS (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
Without visiting homepage everyday, I can get new information easily. It's equal to make me update efficiently. Though it let me catch up newest information, the amount of information can be too big to organize easily. Also it is sometimes difficult to decide which site to take the RSS feeds.

3. How can Google Reader be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
It can be a tool to make me up to date. It is important for researching. Also Google Reader stores all information from all websites. It means I can go to older information when I want to. And the stocked information should be interesting for me because I may choose the source websites according to my interests.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned about RSS that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
Not only make me up to date, Google Reader is useful as a tool to store information. This will let my later research more efficient.
